CHICAGO (March 17, 2023) — “Giving Back: The Soul of Philanthropy Reframed and Exhibited” and the Chicago Public Library will host “A Conversation on Black Wealth-Building and Extraction” from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. March 30 at Woodson Regional Library, 9525 S. Halsted St., Chicago.

The free panel discussion is part of “Giving Back: The Soul of Philanthropy Reframed and Exhibited,” hosted by Chicago African Americans in Philanthropy (CAAIP). The exhibit is free and open to the public through April 30 at the Chicago Cultural Center, 78 E. Washington St., Chicago.

Panelists will include Tonika Johnson, a photographer and social justice artist currently focusing on a living history project that illuminates how wealth has been stolen from Black communities: “Inequity for Sale.” She will be joined by Britney Robbins, founder and CEO of The Gray Matter Experience, and Tracie D. Hall, executive director of the American Library Association.

“We are unable to talk about our giving and generosity without also having a deep understanding of the forces at play that limit our ability to do even more for our communities and each other,” said Jessyca Dudley, chair of The Soul of Philanthropy Chicago. “Today, many are discussing the racial wealth gap, which is a product of economic systems, institutions and policies designed to extract wealth from Black people. This program will connect past harms to our current experiences, including promise and possibility.”
