The Soul of Philanthropy

Black Giving From Generation to Generation

February - April 2023

Since its launch during Black History Month in 2015, the acclaimed and groundbreaking Giving Back: The Soul of Philanthropy Reframed and Exhibited has captivated visitors across the country with its comprehensive, multimedia presentation of stories of centuries-old generosity among Americans of African descent. Appealing to diverse and multi-generational audiences, the exhibit debuted in Chicago during August, Black Philanthropy Month, and then returns February through April 2023 at the Chicago Cultural Center, 78 E. Washington St. Talks, panel discussions, and public forums accompany the exhibition. In cities such as Cleveland, OH, and Charlotte, NC, The Soul of Philanthropy has been an incubator and an activator of knowledge and connection – driving a lasting shift in understanding of the role of African Americans in philanthropy and changing the face of giving in these communities.

Hosting the Exhibit in Chicago and the Influence it Will Have on Giving Back

The Soul of Philanthropy comes to Chicago in the summer of 2022 and continues through 2023. It opens with a pop-up event in August 2022 as a lead-up to the exhibition slated for February through April 2023. The local host is Chicago African Americans in Philanthropy (CAAIP), a membership organization committed to achieving racial equity in philanthropy by advocating for investments in Black communities and expanding Black leadership opportunities in the social sector. Its membership is comprised of over 40 philanthropic, corporate, and civic institutions represented by more than 500 individuals working in the social sector. CAAIP’s members are influential leaders in Chicago who are sitting at tables where critical decisions are being made regarding philanthropic efforts impacting the Black community.

By challenging the current assumptions, practices, and policies that inhibit restoration, growth, and prosperity within Black communities, CAAIP develops strategies that influence how philanthropic resources are allocated and advances the work of racial equity in our sector. CAAIP fosters community among Black people in Chicago and across the Midwest by serving as a communal space for learning and development. By increasing the visibility of Black leaders in philanthropy, advancing racial equity and building a cohesive and vital community, CAAIP aims to redirect philanthropic resources and decision-making to Black communities.
