Local icons, legends and community heroes to be celebrated

CHICAGO (Feb. 14, 2023) — Chicago African Americans in Philanthropy (CAAIP) will host their Premier Reception for the exhibition Giving Back: The Soul of Philanthropy Reframed and Exhibited, on Tuesday, Feb. 21, at the Chicago Cultural Center, 78 E. Washington St. The evening begins at 5:30 p.m. with the program at 6 p.m.

The event will celebrate Chicago icons and legends Common, Academy Award-, Emmy- and Grammy-winning artist, actor, author and activist; Derrick Rose, New York Knicks; John H. Johnson, Johnson Publishing Company; Deborah Harrington, former President of the Woods Fund Chicago; and Wilbur Milhouse, Milhouse Engineering & Construction who visitors will see in the exhibition. Community honorees, nominated by their fellow Chicagoans, will also be feted. They are Dion Dawson, Dion’s Chicago Dream, Emerging Philanthropist; Janell Nelson, JNJ Creative, Hidden Philanthropist; Leslie J. Anderson-Rutland, BMO Financial Group, Legacy Philanthropist; Essence Smith, ELMS Productions, Young Adult Philanthropist; and Jahkil Jackson, Project I Am, Youth Philanthropist.

The evening includes live performances by Red Clay Dance Company, music by DJ Selah Say, hors d’oeuvres and a special viewing of the exhibit that honors individuals who are making a difference in Chicago through their giving of time, talent and treasure. The groundbreaking national multimedia exhibition explores the African-American philanthropy experience and giving traditions grounded in faith, mutuality, responsibility and social justice. Comprised of highly-innovative presentations of over a dozen vignette stories and more than 50 black-and-white images, the exhibition captures philanthropic musings across generations. It opened on Feb. 1 with a press preview and ribbon cutting and continues through April 30. Registration opens at 5:30 p.m.. The program begins promptly at 6 p.m., followed by a viewing of the exhibit. 

Tickets will be on sale until Feb. 19 and must be purchased in advance.
